As the mornings have finally gotten cooler and I am more and more often longingly eyeing my sweaters, I thought it would be a good time to cozy up with some stitched art.
Earlier this summer I had the honor and delight of making illustrations for a wedding. Wedding commissions have the potential to be stressful but this particular commission was a dream as it included drawing dogs. Specifically a Shiba Inu named Doshi.
After a brief miscommunication with the bride - (dog looking regal LIKE a roman emperor bust but not AS a roman emperor bust…IMHO roman Emperor Shiba Inu is one of the best things I have ever drawn) - we landed on some final art. Illustrations of adorable Doshi adorned menu cards and amazingly embroidered napkins!
I have never had my illustrations transformed into embroidered art. I love how it came out. It really opened my eyes to the different ways illustrations can be “printed” and displayed as final art.
This project definitely inspired me to think about a possible Stevie formal dinnerware line - can you imagine the joy it would bring to people!?
Meanwhile, I participated in the Greenhouse Project Residency project this past spring where residents took turns leading workshops on their personal preferred medium. It was an amazing opportunity to explore different art making techniques. My favorite workshop was certainly needlepoint with Delia. After a couple stitches I was hooked. Needlepoint is incredibly meditative - it’s so easy to do while watching TV, or while stuck on an airplane for hours. I never followed a pattern, I just approached each square with a different experiment.
I want to get this piece framed, but I love being able to touch it and feel all of the textures and I really love looking at the absolute chaos of the back. It’s a record of every decision I made.
Love love love!!!
